Introspection with Demetri Martin
18 Dec 3
I kind of always wondered what happened to Demetri Martin. I am a fan of his comedy and am even fortunate enough to say that I saw him live in Minneapolis at the Pantages. For a while he seemed to be running strong. He released a CD that, as far as I’m aware, sold well. Shortly after the CD he had his own special on Comedy Central. The special was out on DVD not long after it aired. Rumors were abound that Jon Stewart had tapped Demetri to head his own show on Comedy Central. I kept a watchful eye because, as I said, I’m a fan but nothing ever seemed to happen. Demetri fell off my radar.
Today I came across this set of videos on YouTube. Apparently Demetri has been spending a year or so doing rigorous self-analysis. He’s kept about 10 of the same jokes and continues to play off of his many admittedly goofy talents.
The new material consists of realizations he’s had regarding self-worth. Being a man of roughly the same age, I relate to a lot of Martin’s input. (doesn’t that sound weird when the person’s name can also be a first name? I feel like I’m talking about the character on The Simpsons.) If it weren’t for Martin, I’m pretty sure this kind of self-analysis wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining. Interesting, maybe. Entertaining, maybe not.
